M-1 MSS Journey of Hope Walk – Top Canvasser

September 13, 2008

With my mom by my side, I participated in the Manitoba Schizophrenia Society’s 18th Annual Journey of Hope Walk, on Saturday, September 13, 2008, at the Assiniboine Park Duck Pond. At 1 pm, the official walk started. There was a choice between 1 and 5 km walk and we chose the 1 km walk.

The day’s festivities included live entertainment, mascots, clowns, and face painting. There was kid’s bouncy tent and games, picnic lunch, and a wonderful petty zoo. Ace Burpee of HOT 103 FM was emcee for the day.

The money raised was targeted for individual and family support and consultation, public education and awareness, and advocacy for mental health renewal.

My goal for this walk was to become the Top Canvasser to honour my mom, who turned 80 on June 27 and for her to get recognition in MSS’s Reasons for Hope newsletter. With much effort and support from family and friends, my mom and I raised $4,460 and was the top canvasser for 2008. My story was published in the Fall 2008 MSS Reasons for Hope newsletter. Chris Summerville, Executive Director of MSS, is also shown in the photos and supported my efforts in this.
