Mental Health
The Crisis is Real
According to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), Canada and the World are in the grips of a mental health crisis that ruins health, threatens lives, and hurts economies. Knowing the facts is the first step on the way to creating new hope. CAMH
Let's Tackle Stigma
In any given year, 1 in 5 Canadians will experience mental illness. By the time Canadians reach 40 years of age, 1 in 2 will have experienced mental illness. And yet, despite these high rates, there is much stigma surrounding mental illness. CMHA
Addressing Stigma
Challenging the stigma with mental illness takes understanding, education, and a closer look at our own attitudes toward health. CAMH
Be Part of the Movement
CAMH is a catalyst for change and working toward a future where breakthroughs in mental health research provide hope. Together, we can solve the big challenges that lie ahead. CAMH
Nature
Searching for Heroes and Hope in an Age of Extinction
Read Mary Ellen Hannibal’s 2016 book “Citizen Scientist”. It is more important than ever that everyone contributes to science as we enter an era where mass extinction of plants and animals are currently underway.
Take Action
Always grounded in sound evidence, the David Suzuki Foundation empowers people to take action in their communities on the environmental challenges we collectively face. We’re One Nature.
Get Involved
Monarch Teacher Network of Canada (MTN of C) is a growing collective of educators and nature enthusiasts who teach and inspire people to connect with nature through hands-on training, teacher resources, and professional development workshops.
Reverse the Trend
March 3, 2021 Journey North reported that the population of monarch butterflies in Mexico wintering sites decreased by 26 percent. Monarchs occupied 2.10 hectares in December 2020, compared to 2.83 hectares at the same time in 2019. If we work together, we can reverse the trend.
Compassion
Homelessness is a Complex Issue
No single organization can end on its own. We must work with partners across sectors to lead the shift from managing homelessness to ending it. This means moving from costly emergency responses, such as shelters and crisis response, to long term, sustainable solutions like prevention, housing, and community services. HOPE Winnipeg
Anyone can become Homeless
People who experience homelessness are not distinct and separate from the rest of the population. The pathways into and out of homelessness are neither linear nor uniform. Homelessness is not a choice. Homelesshub.ca
Homelessness Defined
According to the Canadian Definition of Homelessness, homelessness is “the situation of an individual, family, or community without stable, safe, permanent, appropriate housing, or the immediate prospect means and ability of acquiring it”. Homelesshub.ca
Ending Homelessness
There are various programs and policies that target the issue of homelessness. One of the approaches is Housing First, which is “a recovery-oriented approach to ending homelessness that centers on quickly moving people experiencing homelessness into independent and permanent housing”. Join the Mental Health Movement
The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is leading the charge to break down stigma and discover the causes and cures for mental illness in Canada and around the world.
With your help, we can solve the big challenges that lie ahead. Canada and the world are in the grips of a mental health crisis that ruins health, threatens lives and hurts economies. Knowing the facts is the first step on the way to creating new hope.
The movement to transform the way society thinks about mental health has never been more important. We need everyone to lend their support.
With your time, effort, passion and commitment—it won’t be long before we can all say “Mental Health is Health” and truly mean it.
Stop the Stigma
Each year, one in five Canadians experience a mental health problem or illness every year. That’s about 7 million of us. But despite how common it is, mental illness continues to be met with widespread stigma: in hospitals, workplaces, and schools; in rural and urban communities; even among close friends and families.
It occurs around the world, not confined within national boundaries or cultural groups. The Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) calls on all Canadians to reduce stigma.
Nature
Help Save the Monarch
Monarch butterflies are dying at an alarming rate around the world — a looming extinction that could also put human life at risk. But we have just the thing to help save these insects, says author Mary Ellen Hannibal: citizen scientists.
Learn how these grassroots volunteers are playing a crucial role in measuring and rescuing the monarch’s dwindling population — and how you could join their ranks to help protect nature.
Now, citizen science can do even more than rescue monarch butterflies. It has the capacity to scale to the level necessary that we need to mobilize to save nature.
Sign Mayor's Monarch Pledge
Twenty years ago, more than one billion monarch butterflies migrated from eastern Canada and the U.S. to spend their winters in alpine forests in central Mexico. By 2014, there were only 35 million monarchs left – a drop of more than 90 percent – and their future remains in peril.
The good news: community leaders from all 3 countries have begun taking action to help bring monarchs back from the brink through the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge.
Promoted in Canada by the David Suzuki Foundation, more than 300 communities have committed to create monarch habitat and engage their residents in educational and conservation projects.
Compassion
End Homelessness
Several community groups across Winnipeg are joining forces to find a long-term solution to support the city’s homeless population.
The Winnipeg Strategy to Support Unsheltered People is a 10-year plan with the aim of moving homeless support away from services like Winnipeg police or 311, as well as connecting homeless people with resources.
The plan – which includes input from community groups, public services, the private sector, government, and people with personal experience with homelessness – aims to educate, train and speak out against stigma in the city..
The 10-year plan hopes to shift our city from managing homelessness through emergency and crisis responses to preventing and ending it through longer-term solutions
The people of Winnipeg are ready for positive action to end homelessness. End Homelessness Winnipeg.
Build Relationships
A group that works with homeless people in Winnipeg is looking for volunteers to help connect with people who choose to live on city streets.
The Community Homeless Assistance Team (CHAT), run by Downtown BIZ, hits the streets every day, meeting with people who are “unsheltered” — those who don’t feel comfortable living in a homeless shelter for a myriad reasons.
They’re hoping to attract more volunteers to help offer resources and build relationships.
